Sicilian Mafia defrauded EU of 10 million euros in farm aids: 94 arrests

Jan. 21 – Italyโ€™s Carabinieri and Guardia di Finanza (the Italian financial police) arrested 94 people in a joint police operation last week.

They are charged with stealing agricultural subsidies from the EU.

The illicit revenues were gained through extortion and threats: farmers who did not accept to sell their land or refused to participate in the fraud reported being threatened by Mafia clans.

The fraudulently gained money was moved through banks to be harder to trace, using bank accounts located in Lithuania, Malta, Bulgaria, and other countries.
