US Ambassador to Germany named acting director of US national intelligence

Feb. 20 – US President Donald Trump appointed his ambassador to Germany, Richard Grenell, as the new acting director of US national intelligence.

The role exists since the attacks of September 11th, 2001, and is in charge of supervising the 17 intelligence agencies, either civil and military, active in the United States.

Grenell was named acting director because this choice allows the US President to skip the confirmation by the Senate, required for the appointment of a permanent director.

The ambassador is known to be a Trump loyalist and will succeed Joseph Maguire, who served as acting director of national intelligence since August.
