Iran’s President calls for the withdrawal of US sanctions in order to help fighting coronavirus

Mar. 23 – Yesterday Iran’s top authority, the Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, refused the offer of humanitarian assistance received by the United States.
The Iranian President Hassan Rouhani added that, if United States really would like to help Iran to contain the coronavirus outbreak, they should lift sanctions that severely affect the Iranian economy.

“American leaders are lying … If they want to help Iran, all they need to do is to lift sanctions …. Then we can deal with the coronavirus outbreak,” Rouhani said in a televised speech.

Iran is among the nations worst hit by coronavirus, with over 1,800 deaths and more than 23 thousand of infected people. With the aim of celebrating the Persian new year – which started last Friday – millions of people ignored the advice of avoid traveling. In Iran only pharmacies and shops that provide essential goods remain open, and a dedicated hospital with 2,000 beds will be built in these days just for the treatment of the coronavirus patients.

In this troubled scenario, Iranian leadership blame United States to make hypocritical offers and pretend to ignore that the best help they could give would be to lift the blockade on Iranian oil exports and banking transactions.
