Opposition journalist arrested for “military and political espionage”

Jun. 12 – According to a public news agency, Muyesser Yildiz, a prominent opposition journalist from the online nws portal OdaTV, has been arrested on Thursday and will face charges of “military and political espionage”.

Another journalist, who was detained with Yildiz, has been released.

Yildiz’s news portal, OdaTV, has been critical regarding the government of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. After the failed coup in 2016, Ankara has imprisoned thousands of suspected members of Erdogan’s opponent Fethulalh Gulen, backed by United States. According to Reuters, more than 77,000 people have been jailed and about 150,000
civil servants, military personnel and others have been sacked or suspended.

Several criticals voices blame Erdogan to have used the failed coup as a pretext to strengthen his power and silence his opponents.
