Jul. 15 – The U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has declared that the United States will diplomatically support countries who blame China for violations of their maritime claims in the South China Sea.
“We will support countries all across the world who recognize that China has violated their legal territorial claims as well – or maritime claims as well,” Pompeo said at a news conference, adding that they will provide them assistance in multilateral bodies, in ASEAN and with “all the tools we can”.
The United States is opposing China’s expansive territorial claims on the South China Sea, sending warships and backing the claims of the other countries of the area (Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam), that want to exploit the energy-rich South China Sea.
This statement is the first time the United States had defined China’s claims to the South China Sea “completely unlawful”.
